Book : Haiku for the Single Girl by Beth Griffenhagen

Illustrated by Cynthia Vehslage Meyers and first published in 2011, this Penguin book of American poetry is a fun read, and celebrates both weirdness and words. Each little poem is accompanied by a “simple” sketch on the opposite page. and it’s the first time that I’ve come across the author and her illustrator introduced in Haiku (both illustrated) :

  • Beth’s a single girl                                                                                                                                                                    Living  in New York City                                                                                                                                                      This is her first book.
  • Cynthia Meyers                                                                                                                                                                    Lives and draws in Ridgefield, Conn.                                                                                                                                    She was once single.

Two poems (and their illustrations) that I particularly love are :

  • I smile to myself                                                                                                                                                                   Because I have a secret:                                                                                                                                                      My time is my own.
  • Solitude causes                                                                                                                                                           Loneliness, yes, but also                                                                                                                                                          Fits of ecstasy.
