Love Duets by Dimension5

An Esplanade Presents programme, Coffee Morning & Afternoon Tea, takes place every first Monday of the month. Today’s concert features the Dimension5, a band consisting of five members – David Ng (guitarist & leader), Audrey Tang (drummer), Lebius (lead guitar), Jocelyn Ong (keyboard) and Cat Ong (veteran singer & guitarist).

The theme today is Love Duets, and all the 15 songs in the set are sung by at least two of them, sometimes all of them. Many of the songs are unfamiliar to me – like ‘Things’ (by Dean Martin & Frank Sinatra), ‘Two Of Us’ (by Paul MacCartney & John Lennon) and  ‘Rest Your Love On Me’ (by Andy Gibb & Olivia Newton-John).

I love their rendition of ‘Somewhere Out There’ (from American Tail), ‘Island In the Stream’ (by Dolly Parton & Kenny Rogers, written by Barry Gibb of The Bee Gees, my favourite band) and ‘You’ve Lost That Loving Feeling’ (a song I’ve loved since I first heard Glen Campbell sing it in the ’70s). The best was left to the last – their ‘prepared’ encore (because it was listed in the publicity brochure) : ‘Endless Love’ (by Lionel Ritchie & Diana Ross).

There was a lot of banter – almost as much as the singing – which was the only thing that marred the lovely, relaxing morning.
