Off The Beaten Track

This is an interesting traveller’s anthology by Laura Stoddart that contains exquisite illustrations and quotations such as

In Search of Adventure:

  • They are ill discovers that think there is no land, when they can see nothing but sea. (Francis Bacon)

Advice to the Traveller:

  • Always put up pictures of waterfalls or snow scenes – it keeps one cool. (Constance Larymore)

Those Who Choose to Roam:

  • He who travels greatest travels alone. (Rudyard Kipling)

Deverse Discoveries:

  • The difference between landscape and landscape is small, but there is a great difference between the beholders. (Ralph Waldo Emerson)
  • To lie about a far country is easy. (Amharic proverb)

Meditations on Travel:

  • Travel is almost like talking with men of other centuries. (Rene Descartes)
  • A man travels the world over in search of what he neees and returns home to find it. (George Moore)
  • He who returns from a journey is not the same as he who left. (Chinese proverb)
  • The real voyage of discovery is not in discovering new lands but in seeing with new eyes. (Marcel Proust)

I’ve enjoyed this book though I’ve not ventured out of Singapore for more than a decade.
