A Traveller’s Song

Unsatisfied with my maiden attempt at translating a Tang Poem (Mountain Trail  by Du Mu 803-852), I decided to try another, A Traveller’s Song by Meng Jiao (751-814):

Threads from a loving mother’s hands

Become clothes for a travelling son;

Close, fine stitches before he leaves,

So his return may not be delayed.

Will any tiny blade of grass

Ever repay the sunshine of spring?
