RESPECT

RESPECT is a musical biopic about Aretha Franklin, the Queen of Soul.

The movie opens with the 10-year-old Aretha (brilliantly played by Skye Dakota Turner) woken up by her father to sing at a party. Her vocal prowess (“10……going on 30″) is something not to be missed!

Jennifer Hudson (executive producer as well as playing the lead role) and all the other actors’ performances are top-notch. The set design, costumes and sound mixing are excellent too.

Most memorable are the concert scenes, followed by the studio recoding scenes. Songs include Unforgettable, There Was A Boy, It Ain’t No Way, Say A Little Prayer For You, (You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman, Dr Feelgood and the phenomenal Amazing Grace.

Of course the issues of relationships, sexual assault, domestic abuse and alcoholism are also integral to the story. Through all these, one thing helps in the emotional rejuvenation: Don’t let anyone come between you and music; music will save you.

There are actual footages of Aretha Franklin in concert and singing at the inauguration of President Barack Obama, in addition to other important milestones in her life.

All these, plus the fact that there’s so much music, make Respect feel almost like a musical.
